I cringe when 'friends' so blatantly post pictures of their children as their avatar or cover picture; neither of which are private. So, there are your children with most likely your full name. Easy for your little lambs to be found via sites like Spokeo which provides a picture of your house if a predator so chooses a visit. Remember Richard Allen Davis? How about Polly Klass? She was abducted from her own home by the predator Davis, she didn't return home.
He didn't use the internet to find her he just happened upon her and took her from her own home. Why give these predators with a pick and choose ability? Child of choice and location of choice. Basically doing the work for them.
It took me 15 minutes to locate a friend of a friend's child's home address. Child's name was tagged so I went to her Facebook profile, her photos all public and about information links her parent's account. Went to parent's profile where parent lists city. Found multiple addresses however since parent listed current city I was able to get the correct one. Used the assessor's office to locate address.
Any pictures I did have of my child I have removed. I would post one then take it down within 24hrs. I also don't have my full name on fb. Pics I have on my blog are watermarked-another thing people should do to their online pictures. If you feel the need to publicly share your photos you should try to protect them.
Remember a million 'likes' for Mallory? A down syndrome girl who didn't think she was beautiful and her 'sister' wanted to show she is, by having people 'like' the picture. Millions of us 'liked' her, sadly, I liked also. Well, that photo was stolen and her family was in disbelief someone was not only exploiting a special needs child but it was their child! Facebook, at the time the article was written, proved useless trying to help the family.
Safety is an issue with this too much and over sharing. This social media monster- we don't need to feed it!
I mainly use my blog's Facebook account and only things I share on there are rewards from games and blog posts.
I plan to be less involved with my personal Facebook account. Do you think you could share less on Facebook the next 30 days? Report back how easy or difficult it was for you.
Stay tuned- how Facebook 'likes' affect you...
